Cemeteries

Hollandschap has the necessary experience when it comes to designing cemeteries. Throughout the years, numerous projects have also been realized. Before the realization of the projects, several options were established and researched. A landscape architect is of great importance when developing a cemetery, due to the fact that “experiencing” the surroundings is essential for a cemetery. Cemeteries must be representative, therefore, the image differs per location. This is partially dependant on the religious character, and the existing landscaping elements of the cemetery. These aspects contribute to the design and the character it sends out to the public. Privacy is of great importance when visiting a cemetery, and more importantly, visitors should feel safe. With facilities such as seating areas, water taps, and a possibility to nurture flowers, the basic needs of the visitors are fulfilled. There are also several organizational requirements that need to be incorporated in the design of a cemetery. This is mainly related to practical implications when hosting a funeral, for example the grave sizes and path sizes need to be included in the design. Furthermore, there has to be a possibility to receive large groups of people during ceremonies in the aula, and on the cemetery. Due to the long term, and continuous use of the cemetery, the management is of great importance. This gives a landscape architect the opportunity to create a valuable and sustainable environment with a selection of various trees, bushes and hedges. The design of the landscape architect adapts to the existing natural aspects and blends in with the direct surroundings.
